We cannot ignore the fact that there are a growing number of peo‑ ple who used to profess a faith and call themselves Christians but no longer do so.

Even higher is the number of people who used to go to church only to end up feeling dejected for going to the Char‑ ismatic Disneyland and discovering, to their dismay, that they would never be spiritually tall enough to go on any of the rides. Some leave unable to deal with guilt; others withdraw not being able to reconcile themselves to the apparent contradictions. The cry that has gone up from the Church is the same plaintiff plea heard in Elijah’s day: “O man of God, there is death in the pot!” (2 Kings 4:40). However, rather than treat the stew with the heal‑ ing flour of grace, church leaders of today have all too often insisted that the cure is to simply eat more stew.

Perhaps the greatest presumption of this book will be to offer itself as “flour” for the stew. It is designed as a cure for all who unwittingly gathered the wild gourds of religion (mistaking them for the good news of the gospel of grace), ate them and got sick.
